Aloe Vera Plant
The Aloe Vera plant is a multi-purpose medicinal herb common to many households across the world. They differ from other plant, in that they do not have any naturally occurring populations, although closely related Aloes do occur in northern Africa. It is currently known to mainly live in captivity or cultivated by farmers for commercial use. This alone makes the aloe vera unique compared to many household plants that can also be found in the wild.
Another unique quality is that this plant has many health benefits reported to boost your immune system and case studies have shown that vera juice extract has a positive effect on diabetes and heart disease. As the stalks include several medical compounds, including acetylated mannans, polymannans, anthraquinone C-glycosides, anthrones and anthraquinones and lectins; aloe tends to be added to a wide range of natural Aloe Vera products to entice users to purchase them.
The best gardening temperature conditions for aloe vera to grow are zone 8 through zone 10. It is suitable as an ornamental plant for low-water gardens, as well as indoors. Aloe does not tolerate snow or frost and will die under such conditions. However, you can keep in alive in colder climates by putting it in a greenhouse or transplanting it indoors for the winter months. Being a succulent, the aloe vera plant resembles cacti and other common desert plants. Since it is most acclimated to dryer climates, over watering is the most common mistake that people make in caring for them. The aloe plant should not be watered until its soil has gone dry, making it one of the easiest plants to take care of, so it is important to pay attention to the moister level in the soil. To prevent root rot, be sure to purchase soil made for desert plant life, one that will provide proper water drainage for the plant.
When grown at home, the aloe vera plant is typically used as a topical treatment for burns and cuts. The healing rate process has not been calculated or agreed upon however, it is still something this marvelous plant does provide. There are some indicators that the rate of healing may be dependent on the type and depth of the wound, and how it is bandaged. Several of these studies have shown that the aloe vera plant does indeed speed-up the healing process overall. In certain forms, the aloe vera is safe to ingest too.
Even though there is no scientific evidence that is agreed on by all, of the healing elements found in the aloe vera plant, it is a very popular and sought after additive in a variety of cosmetics, shampoos, lotions and certain soap manufactured products. The benefit to consumers from these products with aloe vera is something highly desired, despite the lack of scientific confirmation of it’s benefits.
The aloe vera gel found in the plant, is believed to have originated in Africa, with cousins of the aloe vera plant still surviving to date. Aloe Vera, has a long and illustrious history dating from biblical times and it has been mentioned throughout recorded history.

How Do We Define High Blood Pressure?
The problem with high blood pressure these days is that it is so widespread and talked about so frequently that many people do not give it the respect that it deserves. The simple fact is high blood pressure, or hypertension, is a killer and should be treated as such.
Thousands of doctors, scientist and researchers have spent a great deal of time and money trying to describe exactly what a true definition of high blood pressure is.
Over the years there have been a large number of human population studies performed on this topic that have given the doctors and researchers a wide range of blood pressure values to work with. Unfortunately however the results are usually skewed and vary from country to country and even from district to district within a specific country. Accordingly, it has been agreed that the true definition of high blood pressure can only be arrived at as a result of constant observation and experimentation.
Normal blood pressure is recognized today much like normal body weight in the sense that the level used for its definition is that which is seen as providing the greatest chance of life expectancy. This is the level at which the heart together with other important parts of the body like the circulatory system are able to operate under optimum conditions without running the risk of heart disease and associated conditions.
Naturally there are some other factors to be taken into account when defining hypertension and some of these need to be excluded. For instance, If a healthy individual becomes their systolic (or pumping) blood pressure can be expected to rise by possibly a significant amount as their blood flow rises in response to extreme emotional excitement or any type of energetic activity. However it does not stay high for long and as soon as the level of excitement has gone down your blood pressure also returns to its normal level.
In addition to your systolic blood pressure you also have a diastolic (resting) blood pressure which is the more important of the two and is a very good guide in ascertaining whether or not a high reading is a false positive. Diastolic pressure is important because it reflects the state of an individual’s arteries and a high reading might mean that your arteries are narrowed and not permitting the free flow of blood.
It is very important to realize that high blood pressure is not a disease in itself but is a key criterion used by doctors to predict or diagnose other illnesses.
Lastly, it is also necessary to realize that hypertension cannot be cured but that it can be controlled very effectively.

Feverfew - An Herb
The herb Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) has always been seen as a medicinal herb. As the name suggests, folk healers employed it as a cure for fevers. Feverfew has been studied scientifically, and, though it does not reduce fevers, it was discovered to be an antispasmodic agent. It helps the body prevent the spasms in small blood vessels that are known to be an immediate cause of migraines. The chief active ingredient has been isolated, and might, someday, lead to a pure extract. Additional clinical studies have found that feverfew can stop vomiting and relieve nausea, while improving digestion. Other studies have reported:
- relief from asthma attacks
- promotion of restful sleep
- relief from the inflammation, and thus the pain, of arthritis.
In the 1980’s, British researchers tested feverfew on migraine sufferers and found that 7 out of 10 people reported either fewer or less painful migraines. Some people reported that feverfew aided with depression as well. The leaves of the plant are normally consumed. The most common side effect is mouth ulcers, and use should be discontinued if this occurs.
There are commercial tinctures of feverfew available, or it can be grown at home.
Feverfew is easily grown in the US and Europe, as it is a relative of the mint family. It grows as a tall (12-24″ or more) bushy plant, which displays a multitude of small white flowers, which will remind you of small daisies. Once planted, it will spread by self seeding and sending out runners. It emerges in the spring, and will continue to grow and bloom throughout the summer if flowers are pinched back.
To use medicinally, consume 1 medium sized leaf each day. There are very few recipes for feverfew available. You may want to try putting it into a tossed salad, along with other fresh herbs. Another approach would be to sprinkle chopped feverfew leaves on top of marinara sauce. It could be made into pesto, using your favorite nuts.
In summary, the potential benefits of feverfew are many, and this important natural herbal remedy should not be overlooked as a treatment for many common health problems. If more information about feverfew is desired, you may want to try “Googling” this term. There will be a wealth of information available on the internet.
